- Mine too. It worked fine when I was running it all by itself but when I

- Simplified answer:
-
- If you already have an HTML file on your PC, and you just want to use
- Mosaic to read it, you don't need a network connection.
-
- If you want to read files on other sites, you will need a network
- connection. That connection can be dial-in. You would need an account
- with a site which provides SLIP or PPP services.
-
- The various "Internet starter" books provide an explanation of this.

- I spent a couple of nonproductive hours one weekend trying to figure out
- if I could run Mosaic to access WWW over netcom through a regular dialup
- account. After ftping what I thought were all the components I needed,
- I ran into the wall of trying to figure out which winsock packet driver
- I needed. All the ones I found required a network card of some sort,
- which I don't have; I'm dialing in on a regular phone line.
-
- If SLIP or PPP is a requirement for running Mosaic in this configuration,
- none of the documentation along the way makes that obvious (as far as I
- could tell), and even a Wired 2.01 (p.136) article on Mosaic fails to mention
- it.
-
- So, for the bottom line, once again, is SLIP or PPP *required* to run
- Mosaic to access WWW over a regular phone line through a service provider
- such as Netcom? (Thanks in advance.)
-

- You need to install packet driver software for your ethernet card, you
- can use the ncsa set. Next, you'll need to load the winpkt driver so it
- points to the same location you loaded your packet driver (usually 0x60).
- Then you can load winsock.
-
- If you've done all of that, make sure that you're actually loading the
- packet driver --with the proper invocation for the network card you're
- using. If that's right, check to see if you have a memory conflict.
-
- Hope this helps.
